The National Board of Revenue (NBR) today extended the deadline for income tax return submission by one month.
Now, taxpayers can file their tax returns by December 31, NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem told reporters at a media briefing in his office today.
The regular deadline expired today.
The extension comes following demands from various quarters as majority of taxpayers are yet to file their income statements amid spiralling coronavirus infections and disruption in the collection of documents and preparing them.
As of today, 15 lakh of the holders of 50 lakh taxpayer identification numbers (TIN) had filed the returns of their income.
“Still, there is a huge crowd of taxpayers. So, we think the deadline for filing the returns requires an extension,” he said.
For the current fiscal year, NBR made submission of income tax returns compulsory for all taxpayers, except for credit cardholders with no taxable income, people who got TIN for selling land and non-residents who do not have any fixed base in Bangladesh.
Last year, nearly 22 lakh taxpayers filed returns as submission was not mandatory. This year, taxmen expect to receive a higher number of returns because of changes in the law made while passing the national budget for fiscal 2020-21.
The official time for tax return filing starts from July 1 every year and ends on November 30, termed as Tax Day.
