Nazrul’s wife says discharge not enough, demands arrest

The army on Wednesday forced three officers, accused of taking bribes to kill Nazrul and six others, to retire. They were deputed to RAB-11 in Narayanganj.

The officers are Lt Col Tarek Sayeed Mahmud, Major Arif Hossain and naval officer Lt Commander MM Rana.

“My husband couldn’t have been killed without the help of the administration. RAB CO Tarek and others killed them in exchange for Tk 60 million,” Selina Islam Beauty said in her reaction on Wednesday evening.

Lt Col Tarek was the CO of RAB-11, and was withdrawn two days after the abduction.

“It’s not enough to discharge them. They have to be tried,” Selina said.

Tarek is son-in-law to senior Awami League leader and Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya.

Seven persons, including Narayanganj City Corporation Councillor Nazrul Islam, senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarkar, were abducted from the city on Apr 27.

Three days later, their bodies were found floating on the Shitalakhya River.

A relative of the slain councillor alleged that RAB had taken Tk 60 million from the prime accused Nur Hossain to carry out the abductions and killings.

The RAB has formed a probe panel to look into the allegation. The High Court has also ordered the government to form a separate probe body.

The state minister for home has promised that the murderers would not be spared.

RAB Director General Mokhlesur Rahman on Tuesday assured a parliamentary committee that the force would not try to protect its members if they were found to be guilty.
