Senior Awami League leader Mohammed Nasim has accused BNP chief Khaleda Zia of lying that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son has money money in the bank account in the United States.
He asked Khaleda to apologise for ‘false statements’.
“Khaleda is being stupid in making such false statements which are unbelievable… She is lying to defame the family of Sheikh Hasina,” the Awami League Presidium member said at a press briefing in the capital on Friday.
His statement came after the BNP chairperson claimed in a meeting on Apr 30 that there was $300 million funds stashed in the US bank account of Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy, who advises the prime minister on ICT.
Nasim said, “Joy has taken Khaleda’s statement as a challenge. He has thrown a challenge as he has the moral courage.”
Addressing the BNP chief, he said, “Accept his challenge if you have the courage, or apologise to the nation for the falsehood.”
Khaleda in the meeting claimed that the documents of a case over bribing a FBI agent in exchange for information about Joy mentioned the $300 billion figures in the account of the prime minister’s son.
She questioned the sources of the money.
Police started a case in Bangladesh following the US suit verdict which awarded Rizve Ahmed Caesar, the son of a BNP leader, to 30-month prison term for the bribe.
Journalist Shafik Rehman was arrested in the case.
Following Khaleda’s statement, Joy called her ‘a liar and a thief’.
“Madam, if you know where the $300 million is, please let me know,” Joy told Khaleda in a Facebook post on May 1, adding, “I would like to donate it to orphans.”
Hasina also urged Khaleda to accept Joy’s challenge in her speech in Parliament on Thursday.
