Information and Broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam said that Bangladesh aims to set a global precedent by ensuring justice for the July genocide.
He made these remarks on Tuesday during a meeting with a delegation from the Turkey-based International Jurists Union at the conference room of the Information Ministry in the Secretariat.
During the meeting, the adviser said: “The genocide committed by the fascist Awami League government during the July uprising is simply unimaginable. Every citizen of Bangladesh demands justice for this atrocity. The interim government is committed to conducting this trial transparently and impartially. Bangladesh seeks to set an example for the world by ensuring justice for this genocide.”
He added: “Through the uprising, the despotic Hasina fled the country on August 5. Subsequently, in the three days of a power vacuum, many fascist supporters managed to escape. We have initiated the trial process for the genocide, and preliminary data collection is ongoing.”
The adviser emphasized that this trial is not only to establish the rightful claims of the victims of the genocide but also as a consequence of crimes against humanity worldwide.
When the delegation inquired about the timeline and process of the trial, the adviser assured them that the trial of the July genocide would be conducted in the International Crimes Tribunal following the highest standards of transparency and international norms.
He said that the trial would never be retaliatory, as justice inherently implies fairness.
He added that there is a consensus among all anti-fascist parties regarding the trial of the genocide and called for national and international cooperation to advance the process.
