US Ambassador in Dhaka Dan Mozena on Sunday lauded Bangladesh’s achievement in agriculture.
“I think the triumph of Bangladesh’s agricultural revolution is one of the great stories of all time, an achievement that defies the conventional wisdom of many who once thought of Bangladesh as a basket case,” he said.
“Bangladeshis, of course, aren’t complacent as they endeavor to take agriculture to ever greater heights, as we are witnessing today. I hope Bangladesh is deeply proud of this tremendous achievement,” he added.
Mozena was addressing the launching of a partnership between Brac Bank and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Under this partnership, Brac Bank will disburse about Tk 40 crore in loans to small and medium enterprises engaged in producing and processing crops, poultry, fishing, and livestock in 20 southern districts. USAID will guarantee 50 percent of each loan.
The partnership complements the US government’s Feed the Future Initiative, which aims to reduce overall hunger and poverty by boosting agricultural production across south and southwestern Bangladesh, said a US embassy media release.
The US Ambassador also noted that there is a great potential for increasing the agricultural production across southern Bangladesh.
He said the intensification of agriculture in southern Bangladesh will result in surpluses of food, taking the nation ever closer to the day when Bangladesh will be food self-sufficient.
