The BNP leader says opposition activists are being tortured in jail despite government’s democracy promise
Senior BNP leader Moudud Ahmed has accused the the Awami League-led government of ‘torturing the opposition activists’ despite its claim of ‘protecting democracy’.
”The government understands nothing but torture,” Moudud, the main opposition party’s Standing Committee Member, said in his instant reaction after walking out of the Kashimpur Jail at around 11:30am on Monday.
He along with two other BNP lawmakers- Barkatullah Bulu and Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie- were released from the jail, a day after a Dhaka court granted them bail in several cases filed over explosion and vandalism.
However, seven other leaders including BNP’s Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul were denied bail.
The others are the party’s Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Vice-Chairman Abdullah Al Noman, Joint Secretaries General Aman Ullah Aman and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal President Moazzem Hossain Alal.
The former Law Minister said he was hopeful of securing bail from the High Court for the arrested opposition leaders within seven days.
”All the cases are false and based on conspiracies,” he added.
He renewed his party’s call to let the next general election be staged under a non-partisan caretaker government.
“The time will come when Awami League itself will realise that it is impossible to stage any election in the country without a caretaker government,” he added.
Annie was released at around 11:15am, Dhaka Central Jail-2 in-Charge Mohammad Jahangir Kabir said.
Moudud and Bulu were freed at around 11:30am, Dhaka Central Jail-1 jailor Nessar Alam said.
BNP leaders and activists welcomed them.
