Apprehending vote fraud in the remaining phases of the upazila polls, BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Thursday warned that people will throw the ruling party into dustbin if it tries to manipulate the vote further.
“You’ve been known to people as a fascist regime by snatching people’s verdict in the last two phases of upazila polls. They will put you into dustbin if you try to manipulate polls in the coming phases,” he said.
The BNP leader was addressing a discussion on upazila polls arranged by Desh Premik Nagorik at the Jatiya Press Club.
“We’ve taken part in the polls as part of our movement strategy instead of only becoming upazila chairman and vice chairman. Where our party candidates win our leaders and activists get encouraged there. People are getting aggrieved where the ruling party is snatching the polls results. So, it will surely help us wage a strong movement,” Mosharraf said.
“Despite vote fraud our candidates have come out with flying colour. They could have won most of the upazilas had the polls been free and fair.”
The BNP policymaking body member was critical of the role of Election Commission for what he said its failure to work independently, neutrally and failure to take any action against the errant ruling party men.
He alleged that in the face of strong criticism the Chief Election Commissioner is going on leave like a helpless person, creating further chance for the ruling party to grab the upazila polls.
The BNP leader said the government is taking preparation to ensure victory of their party candidates in the remaining phases of the local body elections resorting to irregularities, terrorism and muscle power and using the administration. “People are now united. You’ll suffer a very bad consequence if you try to snatch people’s voting rights again.”
Mosharraf said the January 5 election and the upazila polls have proved that no fair election is possible under a partisan government like Awami League one.
He urged the government to immediately quit and hold a fair and fresh national election under a non-partisan government in a bid to restore peace and stability in the country.
