National Board of Revenue’s (NBR) income tax policy department Member Syed Aminul Karim told bdnews24.com on Thursday that a decision would be taken on Sunday.

“There is a possibility of the deadline being extended one more time,” he said.

He said the NBR had forwarded an extention proposal to the finance minister and a ‘final decision’ would be taken after his consent.

He said, this time, the deadline might be extended by a two weeks to one month.

The Income Tax Ordinance provides that tax return must be filed in September, but the cut-off is invariably extended every year.

This year, the time was first extended by one month to Oct-end at the request of the business leaders. It was later pushed to Dec 1, considering Eid-ul Azha, Puja holidays and Hajj.

In a statement, FBCCI, the apex trade body, on Thursday demanded that the deadline be extended again because of the problems posed by Opposition-enforced strike and blockades in filing returns.
