More than 1,000 people have been accused in three cases filed over clashes at Dhaka’ Gabtali during the nationwide transport strike.
Police said the cases accuse 48 persons and another 1,200 unidentified people.
He said charges of obstruction to perform government duties, vandalising and arson of vehicles, and hindering traffic movement have been brought in one of the police cases while the other one is filed under the Special Powers Act.
The third case filed by a victim accuses transport workers of assault and threats, said police officer Ali.
An unannounced nationwide strike protesting the conviction of two drivers kicked off early on Tuesday. The same night transport workers at Dhaka’s Gabtali bus terminal clashed with police leaving four, including three law enforcers injured.
Fresh clashes erupted the next morning when transport workers blocked the road near the Gabtoli underpass.
Running battles erupted between police and protestors on the road from the southern end of Aminbazar Bridge to the entrance of the Mazar Road near the Gabtoli inter-district bus terminal.
Traffic remained suspended at one of the main entrances of Dhaka during the clash.
Transport workers damaged several vehicles, including of police and media during the clash. One of the workers injured in the clash later died at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
