Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has announced that Dhaka-dwellers may experience more internet blackouts at midnights and holidays they are to conduct more drills.
Ahsan Habib Khan, vice-chairman of BTRC, said, “As an ongoing process, drill on shutting down internet may take place at any day considering the sufferings of city’s internet users.”
He made the announcement while speaking at a press conference at the BTRC office on Wednesday.
“The exercises aim at assessing the authorities’ technical capability to shut down internet during any emergency,” said Khan.
Earlier, BTRC announced for a telecommunication blackout anytime between 1:00am and 4:30am on Tuesday in the capital.
The move came as a reaction to the terrorist situation at the Holey Artisan Bakery on July 1 to make sure that telecommunication is in full control of the government if any such emergency is to take place again.
