‘More independent candidates would’ve won if Ducsu polls were fair’
He made the statement at the Dhaka University campus on Wednesday noon
Dhaka University Central Student’s Union (Ducsu) Vice-President-elect Nurul Haq Nur said that more independent candidates would have won, only if the recent polls were held fairly.
He also expressed solidarity with protesting students demanding a free and fair re-election of the recently held election.
Nur stated this at the Dhaka University campus on Wednesday around noon.
Speaking to reporters, Nur said: “The nation wanted a: free, fair, inclusive, and exemplary Ducsu election. However, the administration helped stage a fraudulent election marred by vote rigging.
“Despite their rigging attempts, popular students’ leaders such as me and [Assistant General Secretary] Fatima Akter still won the polls. I firmly believe that more independent candidates would have been elected had the election was held fairly. But, the whole Ducsu electoral process was questionable.”
He continued: “We had proposed several ideas to the administration to make a fair Ducsu election possible, but they did not listen to any of them. I express solidarity with my brothers and sisters protesting for a re-run of the Ducsu election.
“Another election must be organized, incorporating opinions from the students’ leaders and panel members. The administration must organize a free and fair Ducsu polls.”
Among the students’ demands, Nur highlighted issues such as: establishing polling centres outside of the halls, setting the voting time from 8am to 6pm, forming a polling committee with impartial teachers, and using transparent ballot boxes.
