Death row inmates Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojahid and Salauddin Quader Chowdhury are now likely to be in the queue of receiving verdicts from the Supreme Court.
After the execution of Jamaat leaders Abdul Quader Mollah and Muhammad Kamaruzzaman, people are curious about the headway in the appeal hearings of other war crimes convicts.
The International Crimes Tribunals have convicted 15 war crimes accused, predominantly Jamaat leaders. Two of the convicts are BNP leaders and one Jamaat-turned-Awami League leader and another Jatiya party lawmaker.
Moreover, appeals of death row inmates Jamaat chief Motiur Rahman Nizami and its leaders Mir Quasem Ali, ATM Azharul Islam and Abdus Subhan, expelled Awami League leader of Brahmanbaria Mobarak Hossain, and former state minister of HM Ershad’s government Syed Mohammad Qaisar are pending with the Supreme Court.
Sources said there is development in the hearing on appeals of Jamaat secretary general Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojahid and former BNP lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.
The matter was clarified by a statement of Attorney General Mahbubey Alam on Sunday. He said appeals on the duo are likely to be disposed of this year.
The two appeals are now in the hearing list of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. The SC may start hearing the appeals within a few weeks. He said the hearing on the cases was delayed due to vacation of the apex court.
The top law officer, however, expressed dissatisfaction over commuting death sentence of Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee to life unto death for weak investigation resulting in inadequate evidence.
