Golam Maula Rony’s Facebook post expressing his desire to resign as MP has triggered mixed reactions in the social media.

Many welcomed his decision, while others were against it.

Rony, who was elected MP from the Patuakhali-3 constituency in the 2008 national polls on an Awami League ticket, announced that he would quit because of widespread criticism of his alleged assault of two journalists.

“Probably I am going to resign. I feel I should face the conspiracy as an ordinary citizen,” he posted on his Facebook around 12:30pm on Tuesday.

Almost 300 comments popped up within an hour and a half. While some welcomed his resolve to quit, others advised him not to do that.

One Abdul Bashar wrote: “People have faced trouble time and again for telling the truth. But we can’t give up (telling the truth). I’m a fan of yours. I’m, firstly, an admirer of Sayedee, and then yours.”

Advising the MP not to quit, Ashraful Islam Sany said: “Don’t quit. Resignation now would mean accepting defeat. We’re with you even if your party, the Awami League, doesn’t (back you). Keep patience for a few days.”

Tasnim Raihan supported his wish to resign. “Leave the Awami League. You’ll get support as well as peace.”

“One thing that is clear is that you’ve lied to us,” said Zafar Saleh. “A liar can never be a good man or a good leader.”

Someone with the Facebook name, Rajyahin Raja, wrote: “You’re too late (to quit). Why didn’t you do it before? You should have left (Parliament) long ago in protest against the share market scam, Rana Plaza incident and Motijheel mayhem.”

Deshpremik Faisal wrote: “If the party goes against you and sides with hypocrites, you should definitely quit. It’ll force us to turn away from Awami League. Brother Rony, we’re with you. Don’t compromise with anyone and move ahead.”

“You should quit and join the Jamaat-e-Islami. Because you act like a Jamaat agent in Awami League,” said Atiqul Islam Emon.

Rakib Ahmed asked him: “Will you join Jamaat?”

Independent TV journalists Imtiaz Momin Sony and Mohsin Mukul were assaulted when they went to Rony’s office to interview him for a crime-based programme.

The MP was seen punching and kicking the newsmen in a video footage.

The TV management sued him for the ‘murderous assault’. Rony in turn filed a case against the Independent TV journalists and the channel’s co-owner Salman F Rahman, accusing them of extortion and blackmail.

Rony’s party has distanced itself from him only to add to his woes, expressing dismay over the assault and hinting at possible parliamentary actions. The BNP condemned the incident.

Several senior journalists demanded Rony be arrested within seven days. They have urged everyone to boycott the MP on TV talk-shows.
