Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said law enforcement officials are prepared to tackle possible violence that may occur during the national polls.

The minister made this remark at a program called “Meet the Reporters” at the Sagar-Runi auditorium of the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity in Dhaka on Tuesday.

He, however, said that police will make no arrests if there is no warrant or previous complaint against any person during the polls.

The people of the country never tolerated violence; they joined hands with law enforcement and protested against violence before, and will do the same in the future, he added.

Replying to a query, the minister said there would be a smaller Cabinet under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, carrying out limited administrative activities during the polls.

Kamal also said the capabilities of law enforcers have increased immensely. Security forces are prepared to tackle poll-time violence or militant attack. They are provided with enough equipment and devices which have improved their capacity.

“I don’t think there would be any violence during the time of the national polls,” he added.

Replying to another question, he said: “I can assure you that the Election Commission directives will be followed properly. No one will be arrested during the polls without a warrant or having previous complaints against them.”

Militant activities under control

The home minister said terrorism may not have been completely eradicated from the country, but it is under control, with the increase of the capability of the forces.

After the Holey Artisan attack, the government received enormous support from the people making it easier control the situation. Terrorists did not have strength left to conduct any big attack further, he remarked.

“Our police forces have been reorganized, the NTMC [National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre] unit has been introduced, additional forces have been added with new equipment to tackle any untoward situation in the country,” he added.
