Khaleda Begum, 45, lived at a makeshift house on the station premises with her husband Wahed Ali, police said
A mentally challenged woman in Old Railway Station area in the city was beaten to death yesterday by her next-door neighbours, who accused her of child stealing.
Khaleda Begum, 45, lived at a makeshift house on the station premises with her husband Wahed Ali, police said.
Her neighbours Jamal and five others swooped on her and beat her up with sticks around 8am accusing her of stealing his three-year-old son, said Assistant Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Shah Mohammad Abdur Rouf.
Some local hawkers informed the police and also caught four attackers including Jamal while the two others fled, he said.
The 45-year-old was pronounced dead at Chittagong Medical College Hospital around 12 at noon and the body was sent to the morgue for autopsy, added Rouf.
“Khaleda took Jamal’s child to somewhere on Saturday night but could not recall where she kept him. The boy was found in the early hours of the day but Jamal accused her of stealing his boy,” the policeman said.
A case was lodged with Kotwali police station in this connection while four attackers – Jamal, 22, Ferdousi, 40, Yasmin Akhter Tuni, 25, and Paul Deb, 35 – were taken into custody.
“Police are looking into the matter,” said Rouf.
