Labour leaders on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister’s Office urging to reopen the Hameem Sportswear at Tegjaon which was shut down unlawfully.
Hameem Group had closed its factory Hameem Sportswear from October 13, 2014 unlawfully and more than 400 workers became jobless, alleged the workers at a human chain.
National Garment Workers Federation formed the human chain in front of the National Press Club demanding all arrear wages of the workers and called for reopening the factory.
At the human chain, criticising the role of law enforcing agencies, Fazle Hossain Badsha, Member of Parliament and Workers Party general secretary said that when workers protest for their wages police take action, but when owners cheat the workers they do not take any action.
He urged the government to take immediate action to reopen the factory and pay the due wages of the workers as it is their legal right.
Trade union filed a case in this regard in labour court and closing a factory is completely unethical, said National Garments Workers Federation president Amirul Haque Amin.
He said the held sit in programmes and protest meetings and complained to the industries minister, labour secretary, BGMEA president, but neither the government nor the owners took any initiative to reopen the factory.
The workers of Hameem Sportswear formed trade union three times and applied to the labour directorate for registration, but the factory owners barred the workers from forming trade union at the factory, said Amin.
