Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury on Friday dubbed Khaleda Zia the ‘Woman Amir (chieftain) of greater Jamaat-e-Islami” for what she said were BNP Chairperson’s effort to save Jamaat leaders.
She was speaking at a discussion her party Awami League organised in the afternoon at Osmani Memorial Auditorium marking the Martyred Intellectuals Day.
“Begum Khaleda Zia is not a BNP leader. Begum Khaleda Zia is the Woman Amir of greater Jamaat-e-Islam. She is desperate to save her leaders (Jamaat leaders facing trial over charges of war crimes),” said Matia.
Jamaat’s top leadership including the former and incumbent chiefs and two of BNP leaders are standing trial for the crimes they had allegedly committed against humanity in the War of Independence from Pakistan in 1971.
Also a Presidium Member of the Awami League, she made the remarks in presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“I will tell greater Jamaat-e-Islami’s Woman Amir Begum Khaleda Zia that you had been optimistic about Pakistan remaining (over Bangladesh in 1971) until Dec 14…Even today your effort to save the war criminals will not succeed.”
“Greater Jamaat-e-Islam’s Woman Amir Begum Khaleda Zia, please remember that 93,000 Pakistani army unloaded their revolvers at Suhrawardy Udyan to surrender.”
She alleged Jamaat-e-Islami cut tendons of their rivals, attacked law-enforcing agencies and carried out arsons in the name of politics.
