A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman to jail in a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology Act 2006.
The court also asked the jail authorities to provide Mahmudur Rahman with proper medial treatment and first class division as per the jail code.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Shahidul Islam passed the orders when police produced him before his court on completion of his seven-day remand in the case filed for publishing reports on Skype conversation between former International Crimes Tribunal chairman Justice M Nizamul Huq and expatriate legal expert Ahmed Ziauddin.
Tejgaon police produced Mahmudur Rahman before the court in compliance with its earlier order.
On April 11, the court asked the investigation officer of the case, originally filed with the Chief Metropolitan Court on December 13 last year and later registered with Tejgaon Police Station as a regular one the following day, to produce the Amar Desh acting editor before the court on completion of his seven-day remand.
During Wednesday’s hearing, defence lawyers submitted two petitions before the court seeking its directive upon the jail authorities to provide Mahmudur Rahman with first class division and proper medial treatment in jail. However, no bail petition was filed.
His lawyer Advocate Sanaullah Miah also informed the court that Mahmudur Rahman went on a hunger strike three days ago demanding the withdrawal of the case filed against his mother, the release of 19 press workers arrested from Al-Falah Printing Press and allowing the publication of Amar Desh.
Police arrested Mahmudur Rahman from his office in the capital’s Karwanbazar on April 11.
On the day, the same court placed him on a seven-day remand in the case filed under the ICT Act and on six days’ remand in two other cases filed for exploding crude bombs and obstructing police from performing their duties.
