Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad said it was not a mistake to support the Awami League-backed candidate for the Gazipur City Corporation election, despite his defeat.
Ershad was addressing his party activists who were displeased about the support given to Azmat Ullah Khan at the last minute.
Azmat Ullah Khan lost the race to M A Mannan, who was backed by the BNP-led alliance, by more than 100,000 votes on the Jul 6 polls.
A candidate of Jatiya Party, a key ally of the ruling Grand coalition, filed his nominations to contest for the Mayor of the newly formed Gazipur city corporation, but had to step down following a party decision.
Ershad then said he would not extend support to any of the contesting candidates but changed his decision soon enough.
HM Ershad said on Tuesday that his support for Azmat Ullah Khan did not come under any pressure.
The decision was made considering the “interest” of the Jatiya Party.
“I made the decision on my own, and it was based on my conscience. I cannot say why I did it right now, but you will understand when the time is right.”
Ershad was addressing Jatiya Party activists who were angered by the decision to extend support to Azmat Ullah .
“You don’t know what I know, and you don’t see what I see. I have made no mistake.”
Ershad was speaking in a program of the party’s research and tactics division held at the capital’s Lake Shore Hotel.
