At least 10 people were killed and six others injured as they were struck by bolts of lightning in the capital, Chapainawabganj, Sherpur and Rajshahi districts on Wednesday.
In the capital, two day labourers were killed as they were struck by the thunderbolt near the British High Commission in the city’s Baridhara area in the afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Sohel, 20, and Wasim, 19.
Contacted, officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station Rafiqul Islam said the lightning struck the two labourers while they were taking rest after launch on the footpath in front of ‘Bhai Bhai Nursery’ around 2:45 pm.
They were rushed to Apollo Hospitals where doctors declared them dead, the OC said.
In Chapainawabganj, four people were killed and three others injured being struck by lightning in Sadar and Gomastapur upazilas.
Mikail, 17, a Class-IX student and son of Sajjad Hossain of Chandlai village, Omar Ali, 18, son of Shariful Islam of Panditpara village in Sadar upazila, were stuck by the thunderbolt while plucking mangoes in the area amid rain in the afternoon, leaving both of them dead on the spot.
Three other people — Rinku, Ruly Begum and Tuktuki — were also injured in the lightning strike.
Struck by the thunder, Jahurul died on the spot at Noyagola in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, Moslem died on the spot after he was stuck by lightning while working in his cropland during the rain in Shimultala in Gomastapur upazila.
In Sherpur, Renu Begum, 50, of Deflai village and Abdul Latif Mia, 60, of Rangtia village, sustained severe injuries in separate lightning strikes in Jhenaigati upazila in the afternoon.
They were rushed to Jhenaigati upazila health complex where doctors pronounced them dead.
In Rajshahi, two young men – Rezaul, 26, son of Abdur Razzak, and Tariqul, 26, son of Abdul Khaleque –- were killed and Tariqul’s three other siblings injured being hit by the thunderbolt at Barinagar village in Godagari upazila in the afternoon.
Chairman of local Ashariyadah Union Parishad Golam Mostafa said the five were struck by lightning while working in a paddy field around 3pm.
