Let all flags fly proud at the World Cup

The BCB has listened to fans. Attention can now be focused on the field of play

It is to the credit of the Bangladesh Cricket Board that it has listened to fans and shown common sense by swiftly reversing its threat to ban Bangladeshi cricket supporters at the ICC T20 World Cup from carrying the flags of any of the other teams competing in the tournament.

The idea of a flag ban always sounded unwarranted for a World Cup tournament.

More importantly, it drew attention away from the highly commendable job the BCB has done in organising the World Cup in Bangladesh and in hosting many interesting, sold-out matches.

The mere discussion of a ban unnecessarily inflicted damage  on the country’s reputation among followers of cricket . We are grateful for the BCB’s quick u-turn, so that attention can all be focused on the field of play.

Bangladeshis have a well deserved reputation as enthusiastic and knowledgeable sport fans. We trust that as the semi-finals approach next week, excitement will continue to grow and the stadiums will be filled by friendly crowds.

Naturally, we hope all Tigers’ fans will cheer Bangladesh on to overcome their disappointing form and to excel in their remaining two Super 10 matches against Pakistan and Australia.

However these two matches go, all Bangladeshis will still be able take pride in hosting T20’s most prestigious international tournament.

As hosts, we should welcome all fans, of whatever team and nationality, from supporting their teams as far forward as possible.

  1. A sensisble turn around no doubt but the author’s statement that “We are grateful for the BCB’s quick u-turn” on the flag issue that has now clarfied that it has no objection to letting the fans fly flags of all nations is a clear demonstration of how slavish our media has become. Use of the word “grateful” simply does not arise. This is becuase by even floating the idea that BCB did they made the whole nation look mean and dastardly. What they deserve is a strong slap on their face and not gratitude for a decision or a suggestion that for sure tarnished the image of Bangladesh in the sporting world..

  2. I agree with ADK. I also want to add that the turn around was not due to some wise heads realising their mistake in taking the earlier decision regarding the flag, but, my guess is due to some implied threat from from the ICC. Please remember that those who hold office in the BCB are beholden to the government of the day and the elections in this body are engineered like it was done in the election of Jan 5!! The president and the others in the board have no self respect or dignity. They are a bunch psychopaths as most officials are in this country.
