Landslide, wall collapse kill 5 in Cox’s Bazar

At least five people were killed in separate incidents of landslide and wall collapse in Cox’s Bazar today, during the torrential rain of peak monsoon.

Two children, Saima, 3, and her brother Zihan, 4, were buried alive in Ramu upazila’s Dakshin Mithachari, our local correspondent reports quoting fire brigade.

A big chunk of earth fell on their house around 3:00am, said Abdul Malek, deputy assistant director of district Fire Service and Civil Defence. The two parents were injured.

Another rain-influenced landslide killed Shahed, 18, and Saddam Hossain, 28, in Lighthouse area of Sadar town, the fire service official added. Two others were also injured.

An elderly woman was killed in wall collapse in Pekua upazila in the district last evening. Anwara Begum, 60, was killed on the spot after the earthen wall of her house collapsed.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Pekua, Mahbubul Karim, said the victim’s family was given financial aid.

Cox’s Bazar local office of Bangladesh Meteorological Department said they have recorded 208 millimeter rain in the last 24 hours across the district.
