Land allocation for Rab at Kamrangirchar cancelled

RABI-

The government has cancelled the allocation of a seven-acre land meant for constructing an office of Rab-10  along the Buriganga River in Kamrangirchar area in the capital.

Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan revealed the decision while talking to reporters after an inter-ministerial meeting over saving the Buriganga River at the Housing and Public Works Ministry on Monday.

The minister said a 13-member sub-committee, headed by Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Chairman Dr Samsuddoha Khondaker, has been formed to save the Buriganga River through evicting illegal structures from both sides of the river.

The committee is now looking for a new place for the Rab office, Shahjahan said.

Besides, the committee will work out a plan for conducting eviction drive along the Buriganga River and will implement it. The eviction work will be completed by June next, he added.

The committee includes representatives from Ministries of Shipping, Land, Water Resources, Housing and Public Works, police, Rab, Paribesh Banchao Andolon (Paba), Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers’ Association (Bela) and Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (Bapa).

Presided over by Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, the meeting was attended, among others, by Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, Land Minister Shamsur Rahaman Sherif, Food Minister Qamrul Islam and high officials concerned.
