Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu has said that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is “talking just like Pakistanis” about Bangabandhu and the martyrs of 1971 Liberation War.
“Begum Khaleda Zia like Pakistanis is talking nonsense about Bangabandhu, martyrs of Liberation War and freedom fighters and insulting them,” he told reporters in Kushtia on Tuesday.
“We are merely opposing it. This is not political vengeance.”
Speaking at a discussion on Dec 21 last year, the former prime minister expressed doubt over the actual number of martyrs.
Lawyer Momtaz Uddin Mehedi filed a treason case against Khaleda Zia for her remarks.
Mehedi said Khaleda Zia’s comment on the actual number of martyrs was tantamount to sedition.
BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, however, claimed that the case was filed out of political vengeance.
“If taking advantage of democracy, Begum Khaleda Zia talks nonsense about martyrs and Bangabandhu, then she will land up either in the mental asylum or in the court,” Inu further said.
He also claimed that BNP leaders were now trying to “justify” Khaleda Zia’s comment on the number of martyrs.
