BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will hold a meeting with US Ambassador Dan W Mozena at her Gulshan office in the capital Monday night to discuss the current political situation of the country.
Khaleda, also the opposition leader in parliament, is set to discuss the upcoming next general elections, opposition party’s movement on restoration of caretaker government system and latest political situation of the country with the US envoy, BNP sources told The Daily Star on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the BNP chief on Friday alleged that the government was misusing public money in the name of displaying billboards mentioning its development activities across the country.
She called upon the government to hold the national elections under a non-party and neutral caretaker government to test its popularity instead of misusing ‘public money’ in the name of billboard campaigns.
“If you’ve (Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina) done development activities and if you think you’re popular, test your popularity holding the election under a non-party and neutral caretaker government,” Khaleda told reporters after exchanging Eid greetings with noted citizens, foreign diplomats and the cross-section of people at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital.
She also said her party will not wage any further movement if the government accepts opposition’s demand to hold the next election under a non-party caretaker government system.
“Still there’s time. If you love the country and its people, arrange the election after passing a nonparty government bill. Then, we won’t go for any movement and we’ll accept the election result whatever it might be.”
Terming the government ‘failed’ on all fronts, the BNP chief said country’s people are not well because of the government. “No one can celebrate the Eid in peace due to instability of the society.”
Khaleda exchanged Eid greetings for nearly two hours from 10:45am to 12:50pm. Envoys of around 30 countries, including the USA and Saudi Arabia attended the function.
The BNP chairperson used to exchange Eid greetings at the Ladies Club at city’s Eskatan in the last five years, but this year Khaleda chose the BICC.
After exchanging greetings, Khaleda laid floral wreath at the grave of late president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and offered Fateha there.
