Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday sought vote for the party symbol — sheaf of paddy, assuring people of good days ahead.
Addressing an iftar party, Khaleda, a former prime minister, said her party was not afraid of election but the election would have to be an inclusive one under an ‘election-conducive’ government where voters would cast their vote without any intimidation.
BNP Dhaka north city unit hosted the iftar party at International Convention City at Bashundhara in Dhaka.
The BNP chief said her political rival Sheikh Hasina would join the election but not while staying in power.
She said no election would be held keeping Hasina in power.
She said people had already witnessed what kind of election was held under Hasina earlier.
Khaleda said Awami League was afraid of election and would again want to come to power through rigging.
People would not allow them to come to power by rigging (vote), she said.
Khaleda said the government trying to hold unilateral election by harassing, filing false cases and arresting her party leaders and activists.
She said the government would not be allowed to hold another unilateral election.
She said the government even in the month of Ramadan arrested many leaders and activists of BNP across the country.
Khaleda claimed that people would ‘reject’ the incumbent government of ‘looters’, ‘killer’, and ‘repressor’.
She urged police to arrest the repressor Awami League men without fearing them.
The BNP chairperson urged her party’s city units to stay united.
She said Awami League was busy looting, smuggling money and killing people sensing that their time was running out.
She said poor people were now compelled to buy rice at Tk 50 per kg whereas the government was claiming to have imported rice.
They (ruling party) were making profit out of the imports and the imported rice would go into their stomach, she said.
Khaleda called for proper rescue operation in recent landslide-hit areas and to ensure better treatment for the injured.
BNP leaders and activists attended the iftar party.
