BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia moved the High Court yesterday seeking the scrapping of the Zia Charitable Graft case against her.
Her counsel Mahbub Uddin Khokon filed the petition to scrap the case proceedings, citing “irregularities” in the appointment of the investigating officer (IO). The petition said while appointing the IO, the government did not comply with Section 20 (1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Act.
The lawyer told reporters that the trial of the case will go on at the court of Dhaka’s Third Special Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar. The court has already completed the witness depositions. It is now recording the cross-examination of the last witness.
In the case, filed during the military-backed caretaker regime, the ACC accused Khaleda and three others of embezzling Tk3.15 crore.
Earlier Khaleda had moved the High Court with two petitions after she was indicted in the case in 2014, challenging the validity and legality of the appointment of the judge framing the charges. Both petitions were scrapped then.
