Tabith Awal, the BNP-backed mayoral aspirant in the Dhaka North, has been blessed by the party chairperson Khlaeda Zia’s presence at his election campaign.
Khaleda joined Tabith’s campaign around 5:30pm on Saturday.
The BNP chief visited different areas in Gulshan and sought peoples’ vote for Tabith who is running for the Dhaka North mayor post with “Bus” symbol.
Last Tuesday, from a programme in front of the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters, Khaleda endorsed the candidacy of Tabith M Awal for Dhaka North, and called for a silent ballot revolution against a “repressive government.”
With most of the BNP’s top leaders remaining behind bars or staying in hiding, the endorsement by the three-times prime minister gave a massive boost to the aspirants in Dhaka.
Tabith’s father Abdul Awal Mintoo, adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, had filed nomination paper for the Dhaka North mayoral race. His candidacy was cancelled by the Election Commission on April 1, the first day of scrutiny. His appeal against that decision was rejected by the High Court. Later, the Supreme Court also upheld the HC decision.
The Dhaka North and South City Corporations elections are slated to be held on April 28.
