The BNP has denied media reports of a meeting between party Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad in Singapore, saying the ‘baseless reports’ are meant to sow confusion.
BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told the press on Friday that Khaleda was in Singapore for a medical checkup on June 16. But a newspaper reported that she and her eldest son, Tarique Rahman, had met to hatch a ‘master plan’.
“Another newspaper reported that the meeting would be held in Saudi Arabia instead of Singapore. Yet another says Khaleda and Ershad had a meeting in Singapore.”
Terming the reports ‘false and baseless’, he the BNP leader said, “We’re protesting it. These reports are politically motivated. A false propaganda is being done to create confusion among the people.”
Urging the media to be more responsible, Rizvi said, “We get hurt when false reports are published.”
He also urged the media to stop running ‘false reports’ about the party’s Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman.
BNP chief Khaleda and Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad had undergone medical checkup at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. Ershad returned to the country on Tuesday. Khaleda is still there and is expected back on June 24.
The Jatiya Party is part of the government but not of the ruling Awami League-led 14-party alliance.
