In a scathing attack on BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday called the opposition leader bloodthirsty and wanted to know how much blood she actually needs to quench.
“She (Khaleda) is not happy with the way the hartal hooligans engaged in burning innocent people, she needs more destruction, more bodies and more human blood… actually I don’t know how much human blood she needs to quench,” the Prime Minister said.
Hasina was speaking at her official residence Ganobhaban on the occasion of a cheque-distribution programme among the victims of BNP-Jamaat’s April-11 mayhem that had left three people dead and over 200 injured in Bhujpur, Fatickchhari.
The havoc took place when Jamaat-Shibir and Hefajat-e-Islam attacked an anti-hartal rally of Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jubo League at Kazirhat in Fatikchhari upazila, Chittagong, leaving three AL men — Forkan, 24, Md Rubel, 22, and Faruk Iqbal Bipul, 40 — dead.
The premier said the BNP chief did never want to see Bangladesh as an independent country as she always patronised the killers of 1975 and the war criminals. She {Khaleda) wanted to bring back those elements again, Hasina added.
Deploring the recent acts of the opposition party to kill people through arson attacks, Hasina urged all to hunt down those culprits and hand them over to the law enforcing agencies.
The Prime Minister also requested the media not to sit idle when pro-hartal activists go on arson attacks. “It’s also your duty to help out a person from any danger. I’ll request you to focus on those people who are engaged in destructive activities rather than focusing on the victims, as it’ll help the government bring the culprits to book.”
Hasina also said the opposition failed to include the mass people in their destructive activities in the name of agitation. “What do you think? You’ll kill people and people will applaud you. People have rejected your destructive politics,” she said.
Briefly describing government’s various development activities, she said the opposition leader doesn’t like the country’s development and progress. “Being rejected by people, the opposition leader has got angry and is now out to take revenge by burning people to death as they don’t believe in democracy,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina said innocent passersby, bus passenger and CNG drivers are burned to death by pouring patrol over them by the activists of BNP-Jamaat and Shibir with the direct patronage of the BNP leader during their destructive political programmes.
BNP-Jamaat that believes in terrorism, bombing and violence established militancy across the country during their 2001-2006 tenure.
Assuming the office, the Prime Minister said, the Awami League-led present government restored peace and contained all forms of terrorism unleashed by the previous BNP-Jamaat government.
About the upcoming general election, the premier reaffirmed that the election will be held as per the country’s Constitution. “We’ll have to continue the democratic and constitutional process,” she said.
People will peacefully cast their votes and form their desired government, the Prime Minister said urging all to remain alert against any evil design to foil the country’s democratic process.
