Charging the ruling party men with the incidents of killing, forced disappearance and abduction, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday said these repressive and ‘heinous’ acts can be stopped only when a pro-people government assumes office.
“The current illegal regime won’t be able to stop killings and forced disappearance as Awami League and their cohorts are involved in these incidents. So, a pro-people government must be installed through an election under a non-party administration to stop these heinous acts,” she said.
Khaleda was addressing a discussion at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh arranged by Jatiya Ganotantrik Party (Jagpa), marking its 34th founding anniversary.
Mentioning that their door for discussion is still open, she urged the government to hold a fresh election soon under a non-party neutral government through talks. “If the government thinks it’s very popular then it should take a chance to prove that. There’s no satisfaction in wining a voter-less election,” she said.
Khaleda said virtually there is no government in the country as the incumbent regime is ‘illegitimate’ and not elected with people’s votes.
Referring to a Jubo League leader’s alleged involvement in snatching three militants in Mymensingh in February, the BNP chief said the ruling party and their associates are patronising militancy and indulging in terrorism and killing. “How the country will be safe in their hands.”
Khaleda alleged the government has lost control over its leaders and activists even over ministers and MPs. “The government doesn’t have control over the so-called opposition party and administration, too. That’s why abduction, looting, killing and other criminal activities are on the sharp rise.”
Expressing concern over the ‘growing incidents of abduction, she said, “What a sordid condition of the country where people are being picked up from the streets in a broad daylight. No one is now safe in the country. The consequences of killing and forced disappearance will not be good.”
Supporting Jagpa Chief Shafiul Alam Prodhan’s remarks that Awami League regime is an India slave, the former Prime Minister said Bangladesh had not been liberated to become a salve of any one or be run at the dictate of any body. “A strong movement has to be launched to save the country from the hands of the slaves.”
“I don’t know how much independent Bangladesh is! People are being picked up and killed, and their crops are being taken away along the border… We’re getting deprived of due share of water, but the government doesn’t dare to protest these. Actually, this is a slave government,” she said.
Describing the Anti Corruption Commission as blind, Khaleda said, “It doesn’t see the corrupt by the ruling party leaders who amassed illegal wealth. It only sees the opposition party and those who raise voice against the government…this government is even controlling the court.”
Coming down hard on the Election Commission for what she said its biased and submissive role, Khaleda said the commission should be reconstituted for holding a free, fair, credible and fresh election.
She also demanded the incumbent election commissioners resign immediately.
