Khaleda Zia went to her Gulshan office after a five-day pause on Wednesday night.
The BNP Chairperson reached the office at around 8:15pm after the Opposition’s 84-hour general strike across Bangladesh ended.
The Opposition Leader had not come out of her Gulshan residence since last Friday after the shutdown was announced.
The presence of a large contingent of police and RAB in front of Khaleda’s home since Friday had opened up a barrage of discussions and speculations.
Members of law-enforcing agencies in plainclothes took position in streets adjacent to the BNP chief’s office around 7pm.
Several members of the BNP affiliated lawyers’ platform, Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, led by Dhaka Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum’s General Secretary Khorshed Alam are in the office to meet Khaleda.
Former Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof Moniruzzaman Mia is leading a delegation of BNP-backed teachers’ panel.
The last time Khaleda went to her Gulshan office was on Thursday to have meeting with ambassadors of nine European Union countries.
She had returned home at around 11pm that night after meeting leaders of the 18-Party alliance.
BNP’s acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had announced a 72-hour shutdown from the Gulshan office on Friday.
Security agencies took position in front of the office after the meeting. Hours later, BNP Standing Committee members Moudud Ahmed, Rafiqul Islam Mia and MK Anwar were arrested from Karwan Bazar.
Later that night, Khaleda’s advisor and business leader Abdul Awal Mintoo and special aide Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas were picked up from in front of the BNP chief’s Gulshan residence.
The Opposition had extended its shutdown by another day protesting against the arrests.
Meanwhile, Mirza Fakhrul showed up at the Gulshan office barely an hour after Khaleda had arrived there.
He had been staying at an undisclosed ‘safe’ place for the past five days after announcing the shutdown.
No senior leaders of the party were seen in the open after police presence was beefed up in front of the Gulshan office and Khaleda’s residence.
Fakhrul went to the BNP chief’s room on the first floor and had a closed-door discussion with her.
