State minister for home Asaduzzaman Khan said on Sunday that Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia would be arrested if the court orders so as the BNP leader was already named in several cases for arson attacks during the ongoing blockade.
‘We have not yet received any instructions from the court for arresting the BNP leader. If the court orders arrest of Khaleda Zia, the law enforcement agencies will carry out that order,’ the junior minister said responding to reporters’ questions at the secretariat.
Earlier on the day, he presided over a meeting for ensuring law and order on the occasions of Ekushey February and the month-long Ekushey Book Fair 2015 that begun on Sunday at its traditional venue at Bangla Academy.
‘We have taken all measures to ensure foolproof security at the book fair venue,’ the state minister added.
Asaduzzaman claimed that the inter-district road communications had become almost normal during the nonstop blockade called by the BNP-led opposition alliance since January 5, primarily in protest against restrictions on holding an anti-government rally in Dhaka.
The government on Saturday night restored power connection to Khaleda Zia’s office at Gulshan in the city, about 20 hours after snapping the line along with telephone, internet and satellite cable connections that had kept her virtually incommunicado, widely covered by the media in home and abroad.
The power line to the two-storied office building was cut off at about 2:45am, just hours after shipping minister Shahjahan Khan threatened to sever the connections of all utilities and force Khaleda to starve to death if she did not call off the nationwide transport blockade that has so far left 43 people dead and scores injured.
Information minister Hasanul Haq Inu on January 27 said Khaleda would land in Kashimpur jail for abetting violence during the blockade.
Meanwhile, Chauddagram police in Comilla on January 25 filed a case accusing BNP chief Khaleda Zia and 31 other party activists for arson attack on a covered van and six buses in the district.
Khaleda Zia’s name was also mentioned in the first information report in connection with two cases related to Demra bus arson in the city.
