Communications Minister Obaidul Quader has said the construction of a tunnel under the Karnaphuli River will begin in January next year.
“The 3.5km tunnel will be built at a cost of Tk 90 billion,” he said after visiting the naval sea beach area, the possible construction site, in Patenga Friday morning.
It will be built on a ‘Government-to-Government’ basis, Quader said, hoping the project would be completed by 2018.
He said the tunnel would be connected to the proposed Asian highway and to Dhaka-Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway.
Quader said facility would immensely benefit the port city.
Chinese company ‘CCC’ and Hong Kong-based ‘Arup’ have prepared the tunnel’s alignment after doing a feasibility study costing around Tk 140 million, Quader added.
