The resignation letter had been sent to the President’s office, he told reporters on Monday.
About its acceptance, Hossain said, “I don’t know anything about that yet.”
On Sunday, the Dhaka University Professor had said that he would resign anytime.
JU registrar Abu Bakar Siddique told bdnews24.com that the VC had sent the letter to the President’s office on Monday morning via his personal secretary, Sanowar Hossain.
The JU teachers’ association, general teachers and students, university officers and staff had been pressing for the VC’s removal.
Jubilant teachers distributed sweets on Sunday night on learning of the his decision.
Professor Amir Hossain, one of the agitating teachers, said the move would bring peace in the university.
Anwar Hossain was made the Vice-Chancellor on May 17 last year after his predecessor, Prof Sharif Enamul Kabir, resigned following demonstrations by students and teachers.
Later, Hossain was made the permanent VC through an election.
But university teachers started a strident movement for his resignation over several demands, forcing the country’s only residential university at Savar, on capital Dhaka’s outskirts, to stay closed for much of last year.
