Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed, better known as Joy, has said he will keep coming back to Pirganj, from where his father, Wazed Miah, hailed, evoking loud calls for his nomination from there.
Speaking at a mass rally with his mother Hasina at Pirganj, Rangpur, he said his father used to love Pirganj and so did his mother.
He said, in the region’s dialect, he was the son of Pirganj and would keep returning.
About Pirganj’s development he said, “During the last election I had promised that Pirganj would see development if the Awami League is elected to power. A lot of that has been fulfilled.”
Joy urged the people to vote for the Awami League to see the rest of the promises get fulfilled.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived at Rangpur accompanied by her son, daughter and grandchildren to inaugurate ‘Wazed Miah Bridge’ over river Korotoa and some other projects. The Prime Minister and her son after inaugurating the bridge addressed a public rally at Pirganj Government High School.
Local leaders have been demanding that Joy be nominated as a candidate from Pirganj in the ensuing national elections.
Sheikh Hasina in response to that said, “You will know about this at the right time. Awami League will always be with the people of Rangpur, and so will Joy.”
This is Joy’s first visit to Rangpur after his marriage to Kristina Overmyer. Saima Hossain Putul and her husband too were present on the trip.
The Prime Minister’s in-laws residence ‘Miah Bari’ at Fatehpur of Pirganj was decorated ahead of their trip. Tight security was put in place in the entire area.
“People see good days when Awami League comes to power. They receive health care and witness a rise in literacy rate. Farmers get proper prices for their produce, they get fertilizers. There is no drought”, Sheikh Hasina told the rally.
“But when BNP comes to power, they kill, loot, conspire and support militancy. People die of hunger. Farmers die of bullets to get fertilizer.”
She mentioned corruption by BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s two sons, “They have smuggled out millions of taka outside the country. We caught them. Their trial has begun.”
BNP and Jamaat is behind the rise of Hifazat-e-Islami said Sheikh Hasina.
“Those who sets fire to mosques and Qurans in the name of saving Islam, what kind of Islam do they want?”
The Prime Minister said those who are spreading misinformation about Awami League in mosques must be dealt with.
The helicopter carrying the Prime Minister and her family landed on the helipad near ‘Miah Bari’ at around 12 noon. She reached the main entrance of the house in a convoy.
The Prime Minister was given a guard of honour when she reached there at 12:55pm. She and the rest of the family paid respect to Wazed Miah’s grave there.
