Activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) went on the rampage and vandalised many vehicles in different places of the city on Monday, apparently protesting a court warrant for the arrest of BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman.

Issuing the arrest warrant, a Dhaka court on Sunday asked the government to take necessary steps to bring Tarique back with the help of Interpol.

Witnesses said the JCD men brought out a procession at Bangshal in the old part of the city around 1:30 pm. They also damaged several vehicles during the procession.

Later, a team of Bangshal Police Station swooped on the procession and dispersed it. The law enforcers also detained two JCD activists from the spot.

Earlier in the morning, eight JCD men were detained by the New Market police when the activists of the BNP’s student wing of Dhaka University unit brought out a procession at Hatirpool at about 10am.

Police dispersed another procession brought out by the JCD Titumir College unit in front of the college at Mohakhali at about 10:30 am.

Witnesses said the JCD activists vandalised several vehicles from their procession. Later, police rushed in and charged baton on them to disperse them.

Another procession was brought out by the JCD Jagannath University unit outside the university at about 10am. The JCD men damaged 10-12 vehicles and fled the scene when police rushed in.
