Jatiya Party secretary general Mujibul Haque Chunnu on Tuesday said that his party had joined Bangladesh’s next general election as the government and the Election Commission had assured them to hold a fair election.

Talking to reporters at the Jatiya Party chairman’s office at Banani in Dhaka, Chunnu said that his party would contest in the election unilaterally and with its own symbol.

He hoped that his party would get more votes than the ruling Awami League if the voters could come to the polling centres and exercise their voting rights appropriately.

The number of anti-Awami League votes has doubled than that of during the previous election, he observed.

Chunnu said that they wanted a fair environment for the election though the experience during local elections in the past few years was not pleasant.

The Jatiya Party leader said that the environment of the election would be understood after the allocation of symbols.

He said that the candidature of nine Jatiya Party candidates had been cancelled so far and that all of them would appeal against the returning officers’ decision.
