The daylong nationwide hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami protesting the ICT-2 verdict against its assistant secretary general M Kamaruzzaman is progressing amid stray incidents of violence across the country today (Sunday).
Two crude bombs were exploded by hartal supporters in Bijoy Sarani area of the city around 6.00am.
Hartal activists burnt a tyre and brought out a procession in Rayerbagh area of Shanir Akhra under Jatrabari Police Station around 6:10am.
Police fired seven blank shots to disperse them.
Police arrested two pickets from Mir Hajirbagh at Jatrabari when they set a pickup-van on fire around 6:15am.
Activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student front of Jamaat, brought out separate processions at Pallabi and Bakshibazar in the capital
around 6:30am.
Shibir activists also brought out a procession from in front of Mirpur Bangla College around 6:30am, which police dispersed later through a chase.
Meanwhile, a hand grenade type object was spotted by locals at Dainik Bangla intersection in the city around 8.00am.
On information, a bomb disposal unit of the Detective Branch (DB) of police went to the spot and defused it at 9.00am.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sanowar Hossain of DB (bomb disposal) police told UNB that whether the object was grenade could be ensured only after test in libratory.
In Natore, activists of Jamaat-Shibir blocked the Natore-Dhaka Highway torching tyres in Harishpur area of the district town in the morning.
They were seen moving in the area wielding sticks at that time.
International Crimes Tribunal-2 in a verdict on Thursday condemned M Kamaruzzaman to death for his crimes against humanity during the country’s Liberation War 42 years back.
In a statement on Thursday, Jamaat acting secretary general Rafiqul Islam Khan announced the shutdown programme.
In the statement, Rafiq said the verdict was delivered with a view to annihilating Jamaat and killing its leaders.
“The country’s people have rejected with hatred the verdict pronounced by the tribunal to take political revenge,” he added.
He also urged people to make the hartal programme a success.
