Jamaat-e-Islami will not be able to participate in the next general election as the High Court had declared its registration illegal, Election Commissioner Shah Nawaz said today.
The election official made the statement while speaking to journalists at the Election Commission Secretariat in the capital.
When asked, whether the EC will issue any gazette notification or circular cancelling Jamaat’s registration, he replied: “We are scrutinising the copy of the verdict and will take decision later.”
On August 1, a three member special High Court bench declared illegal the registration of Jamaat as a political party with the EC.
The full text of the verdict was released on November 2.
If Jamaat appeals against the verdict and the Supreme Court does not stay its execution, the party will not be able to participate in the election, according to experts.
