Jamaat-e-Islami called countrywide non-stop 48-hour shutdown (hartal) from August 12 morning protesting the High Court verdict on Thursday declaring illegal its registration with Election Commission.
A three-member panel of the HC passed the judgement after accepting a writ petition that challenged the legality of Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration as a political party.
Bangladesh Tariqat Federation’s Secretary General Rezaul Haque Chandpuri and 24 others filed the writ petition on January 25, 2009.
Jamaat will hold countrywide protest rallies against all the government conspiracies to eliminate it, said a press release issued in the evening.
Terming the HC verdict “flawed” the party said, “Under the article 38 of the constitution Jamaat deserves the right to work as a political party.”
“We think by declaring illegal the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami the court also has given the scope to cancel the registration of other parties which will be a great threat to democracy and rule of law,” the party said.
