The maiden Gazipur City Corporation elections will see a single Awami League-supported Mayor aspirant at the intervention of party chief Sheikh Hasina.
The Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said after a meeting on Tuesday, Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Jahangir Alam has withdrawn from the race in favour of Azmat Ullah Khan.
In the wake of the heavy defeat in Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet city corporation elections, Hasina intervened in the party dispute surrounding the Gazipur city polls.
The Awami League supported former municipal Mayor Azmat for the elections. However, Jahangir defied the party decision to throw himself in the fray.
Both these candidates were called in for a meeting at Parliament on Tuesday night.
It was after this meeting that Jahangir decided to step aside.
However, since the formal nomination withdrawal date is over, ballots will bear the name of Jahangir.
Earlier on Tuesday, six candidates were allotted symbols.
The race is believed to be decided between Azmat and BNP-backed former State Minister MA Mannan.
