Jagannath University has sacked mass communication and journalism department teacher Mir Moshref Hossain aka Razib Mir for sexually harassing several female students.
The university’s syndicate took the decision on his dismissal on Sunday after he was found guilty by three investigation committees, Vice-Chancellor Mizanur Rahman told bdnews24.com.
This is the first sacking of any teacher by the university for sexual abuse.
Razib was asked not to take postgraduate classes and withdraw himself from other activities of the department in April last year following the recommendation by one of the three investigation committees.
The committee was formed when some students complained to the VC that Razib had demanded that female students sleep with him and threatened to victimise them if they did not oblige.
The committee found prima facie substance in the allegations and he was later suspended.
The then dean of Dhaka University’s social science faculty and president of Bangladesh Federation of Teachers’ Associations, Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed headed the committee. Joint Secretary of Education Belayet Hossain Talukder and Jagannath University Teachers’ Association General Secretary Prof Noor-e-Alam Abdullah were the two other members.
The committee held a public hearing in the presence of the complainants in November last year and later declared Razib guilty in its report.
Students attached to Chittagong University’s Shamsunnahar Hall confined Razib in his office on similar charges when he was a teacher there in March 2004.
In April, 2014, hundreds of Jagannath University students demonstrated on the campus and submitted a memorandum to the VC against Razib for allegedly backing militancy and making indecent proposals to female students.
