Has our PM gone berserk?

Jamaluddin Ahmed

Mahfuz Anam the editor of The Daily Star commented on February 24th “This is for the first time we have heard anything positive from the PM about Yunus since she took power this time. Is Sheikh Hasina’s change of heart for real? Or is it a mockery, with the underlying message, ‘Take him away from Bangladesh?’ We hope it is the former.”

Her sympathizing Parliament Members are trying hard to make a PR campaign to tell the public indeed she has made up to the Nobel Laureate with the gesture of goodwill. Dr. Yunus immediately retorted back he was not interested to become the President of the World Bank. It is not known whether Dr. Yunus has taken the whole episode as yet another mockery by Hasina.

As soon Hasina opens her mouth in public you can hear bad language fluently pouring out against her rival Khaleda as if there is no filter. Many people wonder whether she has a speech writer vetting her topics before letting go tirades of bad speeches. After all, she is the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, a land of approximately 160 million people. The respect of the nation is at stake. Now a days, people are quite educated and understand these vitriolic slurs.

Her regime has systematically silenced the media by intimidation, murder and direct threats. Now the media in Bangladesh is parroting out news and views that is suitable for the regime. She has resorted to all means to silence the opposition by not even allowing them a proper platform to make counterpoint. When they call for public show of opposition, their supported are arrested by the thousands, packed in a police van and shipped away for few days. On March 12th, she blocked all transport leading to the capital, as she was afraid it may become one of the largest rallies by the opposition. It was intolerable. So she prepared well in advance to route people away from the capital city.

In this memorable month of March, instead of making calls for unity she tried to make it a show for the Awami Leaguers. As if rest of the people opposed the freedom movement that was started off by her father. She has termed Ziaur Rahman as a foreign sympathizer. Her party even doubted if indeed Zia’s body is in that grave behind the parliament. A sign board “Zia Uddan” was removed. Dhaka airport’s name was changed from Zia International Airport to ShahJ alal Airport.  Some party stalwarts would like to see Zia’s remains moved from that grave to somewhere else.

She has packed the courts with AL sympathizers, unqualified Judges to make sure they  sang AL songs. The current President pardoned hard criminals who have been involved with many murders. Many people suspect the murders in Pilkhana in February 2009 was orchestrated by her party and sympathizers. Many of the valuable witnesses died under custody, so the true outsome of the investigation to this mutiny is under jeopardy.
