Awami League leader Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir has demanded an investigation into Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan) General Secretary Badiul Alam Majumder’s taking money from the Election Commission ‘under the cover of research’.
He made the demand on Thursday while speaking on thanks-giving motion on President’s speech in Parliament.
Alamgir, a former home minister, said: “He (Majumder) took Tk 6 million from the Election Commission several years ago in the name of research. Let the Election Commission take measures to retrieve the money and the Anti Corruption Commission investigate the matter.”
But an EC official, asking not to be named, told bdnews24.com: “Sujan was the only NGO which was given the work during the Narayanganj and Comilla city corporation elections. Tk 900,000 for Narayanganj and Tk 300,000 for Comilla polls were allotted to the NGO.”
“But the EC did not give Sujan any work during the national election in the face of protests from other NGOs.”
Alamgir said his own assets increased by 40 percent in last five years, not 1,135 percent as claimed by a section of the media.
“The media reports are not correct.”
The Awami League leader said he got the assets of his eldest son who died two years ago.
He claimed that his asset information that Prothom Alo and Daily Star newspapers published was provided by Majumder.
Alamgir, who was elected MP from Chandpur, bashed the media for publishing reports on his assets statement submitted to the Election Commission.
He said Prothom Alo and Daily Star lied about his assets and said the two newspapers had supported installation of the army-backed caretaker government through proclamation of state of emergency on Jan 11, 2007.
“These newspapers wanted to install an autocratic government. They tried to establish a caretaker government.”
Nurul Islam Sujon MP also spoke on the thanks-giving motion.
Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah presided over the session, which was adjourned until 4pm on Sunday.
