Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu said on Monday the government has failed to resolve the mystery behind the killing of journalist couple Sagar-Runi.
His remarks came when a delegation of Dhaka Reporters’ Unity led by its president Shahed Chowdhury called on the minister at his office and placed a nine-point demand, including trial of killers of the journo couple.
On February 11, 2012, Maasranga Television News Editor Sagar Sarowar and his wife ATN Bangla Senior Reporter Meherun Runi were stabbed to death in their residence in the city’s Razabazar area.
He said he will be able to explain the latest status of the case in next 10 days to bring the issue to the notice of the authority concerned.
The journalists demanded that a status on the murder case be given by February 11, the second anniversary of the killing.
The other demands included implementation of the Prime Minister’s pledge to bear responsibility of the couple’s son Megh, release of three detained journalists of Inqilab and immediate implementation of the eighth wage board for journalists.
About the premier’s pledge, Inu said he’ll be able to tell about it in 10 days.
He said the administration is too slow to investigate the killings of journalists in the country.
Regarding the Inqilab journos, the minister said a part of the complex case has been resolved and he hoped the remaining issue will be resolved.
About the eighth wage board for journalists, Inu said there is a committee to monitor implementation of the award. Actions will be taken against those who are not implementing the award.
The minister hoped that he’ll be able to raise the issue of formation of journalist welfare fund in Parliament on February 5. The fund will act as a trust to be created with donations.
