Customs officials detained an Indian national along with 65 gold bars weighing around eight kilograms at Shahjalal International Airport in the capital Monday night.

They also seized 11,225 memory cards and 11 iphones from his possession, Alamgir Hossain, senior assistant superintendent of Armed Police Battalion (APBn) told The Daily Star Tuesday morning.

Dipak Kumar Acharya, 60, came to Dhaka from Hong Kong by a flight of Bangladesh Biman, he said.

The customs officials challenged Acharya following his suspicious movement and found the gold bars and other valuables searching his hand bag around 10:30pm, Hossain said.

The market price of the gold bars is worth around Tk 3.5 crore while the cost of others items is Tk 50 lakh, the APBn official said.

While talking to The Daily Star around 11:15am Tuesday, Shamsuddin Saleh Ahmed Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Airport Police Station, said, “We have heard the incident but no customs officials contacted with us in this regard till now.”
