India wants to build a lasting relation with Bangladeshis, not a specific party, says BNP’s Moyeen Khan

The BNP Standing Committee member accompanied party chief Khaleda Zia to a meeting with the Indian prime minister in Dhaka on Sunday.

“He said we have to foster people-to-people relations. Governments alternate but it is the people who truly represent the country,” Khan told a discussion on Monday.

“Our neighbour India has realised this hard truth.”

During her meeting with Modi, Khaleda spoke about “absence of democracy” in Bangladesh.

The BNP, which often played the anti-Indian card in the past, has, of late, been full of praise for Modi.

It believes the Indian prime minister’s plan for regional development has similarities with the concept of SAARC.

Khan said the Indian prime minister was trying to raise the whole South Asia on a single platform.

“Don’t forget that SAARC was [BNP founder] Ziaur Rahman’s brainchild,” he said.

“Narendra Modi is trying to take the concept a step further after 35 years.”
