IGP asks cops to tighten security ahead of Ramadan

 Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hasan Mahmud Khandker on Thursday directed police personnel to work sincerely and professionally to ensure people’s security ahead of Ramadan so that they can celebrate upcoming Eid in a peaceful manner.

The IGP gave the directives during a meeting on law and order and traffic management during the month of fasting and Eid-ul-Fitr held at the Police Headquarters.

Chaired by the IGP, the meeting was attended by chiefs of different police units, including Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), commissioners of different metropolitan police, DIGs of six ranges and senior police officers concerned.

Sources at the Police Headquarters said the police chief also ordered the senior police officers to remain alert as well as to play their due role so that no slow vehicles like Nasiman, Kariman and Bhatbhati ply on the highways in order to ensure smooth movement of transports and reduce accidents on the highways.

He underscored the need for creating an all-out social movement against illegal drugs, saying drive against the drugs has to be strengthened showing ‘zero tolerance’ to narcotics items.

The IGP said the ongoing countrywide drives against formalin and chemical-soaked fruits and foods will continue. He asked the officials involved in such drives to continue it with responsibilities.

Hasan Mahmud warned that stern action will be taken against any police member if any specific allegation is found against him for unprofessional behaviour or negligence of duty.

Sources said the meeting discussed elaborately the overall law and order, security of passengers and safety for journey by trains, buses and launches during the Ramadan month. Traffic control and management, security for Eid congregation and curbing the flow of fake currency during Ramadan were also discussed widely in the meeting.

The meeting decided to take special security measures to control extortion, mugging and criminal acts across the country, including Dhaka city.

The meeting also decided not to search vehicles without specific allegations on the highways for smooth movement of the vehicles.

Control rooms will be remained open from July 18 to July 31 at the police headquarters as well as all the police units, including district levels, said a senior officer as quoted the meeting.
