IG Prisons Motaher to become defence adviser at Bangladesh’s Permanent Mission to UN

Inspector General of Prisons Brig Gen Syed Mohammad Motaher Hossain has been sent back to the army.

Motaher, who held the position as the chief of prisons for the last two years, is tipped to become the next defence adviser at the defence wing of the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN, New York, said the Department of Prisons, citing another notification of the Ministry of Public Administration.

The prisons department, in a press release citing another office order by the public administration ministry, said his transfer to the army has already been decided.

Masud Hassan Jewel, jailer of the Department of Prisons, confirmed the development to The Daily Star.

The move comes a day after Motaher held a press conference where he spoke openly about overcrowding in prisons, shortage of doctors, and other challenges facing the system.

Speaking to the newspaper today, Motaher said, “I was aware of the transfer; hence, I organised the briefing to highlight my activities during my tenure as IG prisons.”
